Planning Your Program
Richmond offers a major in theatre and a minor in theatre or dance. Once students declare a major in the department, typically some time during their sophomore year, they are assigned a faculty member who will serve as their advisor and help them develop a program of study to achieve their educational goals.
The theatre major requires 11 units. Students take courses in production, history, performance, technical theatre, theory and movement. Some students choose to participate in the department’s honors program, which involves taking at least six hours of honors credit in upper level courses and completing an honors performance or thesis. Students who wish to graduate with honors typically meet with the honors coordinator for the first time during their sophomore year.
In addition to demanding coursework, students enjoy unparalleled opportunities for research and experiential learning that reinforce the material they are learning in the classroom, studio and stage. It is the combination of these experiences that make students studying theatre and dance so successful after graduation.
